After a 3-year-long accurate restoration work, Schola Sarmenti eventually opens its doors to wine lovers – a mid-1800s wine building, abandoned for over 50 years. Not only an old symbol of the Salento oenology, but also an important cornerstone of our architectural tradition has been brought back to its original beauty by the Marras and Calabreses. At our winery, visitors may admire the breathtaking beauty of the starry vaults made of tuff stone ashlars and pietra leccese. The embrace between present and past finds its higher expression in the unique, thrilling details. Going slowly downstairs, an intense fragrance enchants your heart and you can not wait to uncover our underground world. A last step and you are finally immersed in our wine world – a barrique cellar realized from old tanks where an ideal temperature and a constant level of humidity all the year round make it the perfect place for aging wines in barrels first and refinig wines in bottles later. A place where you can breathe the air of the past while the scent of wood and the exciting smell of wine give you a foretaste of a perfect delight.

“Since I was a child I have always loved country life. I loved flanking my grandparents in every moment of peasant life. They taught me that we Salentines would have solid and deep roots only by following and respecting the agricultural culture. So it was that after several years of experience in the family pasta factory, I decided, alongside an authoritative expert, my grandfather Vito, a farmer with more than fifty years of experience, to take care of the production chain of “our pasta factory”. Born in a land like Puglia, defined as the “Granary of Italy”, we started our production always keeping in mind two elements: our roots and qualities. In this way we have selected the oldest and most valuable varieties of indigenous durum wheat. We therefore planted the varieties Senatore Cappelli, Saragolla, Russarda (also known as the Red Queen of Salento), Capinera, Orzo Salentino and chickpeas. ”

In Apulia, a lively land, with a thousand faces, where nature gives its best, feeds on the light of the sun and is caressed by the wind, humble farmers work and tell stories of passion. An image which accompanies us since childhood is the image of fields full of good fruits, memory of a genuine and simple Apulia. The memory of games and carefree races, in an intimate and joyous atmosphere, among the golden fields and the rows of the vegetable garden, full of treasures. Our grandparents were farmers and were married throughout their lives to their dusty, magical and miraculous land, they worked with energy and enthusiasm in an old and incomparable landscape, an extraordinary place of love and dedication. They entrusted us with the task of enhancing our land, our roots.

The Azienda Agricola Vitivinicola Bonsegna was born, at the behest of Primo Michele Bonsegna, in 1964, in Nardò, land of the noble Negroamaro, the robust Primitivo and the soft Malvasia Nera. Since 1991 the company has been run by his son Alessandro, who has inherited not only the management, but also the passion for a job that can be as tiring and burdensome as it is full of great satisfaction. The proprietary vineyards, divided into 25 hectares, are located entirely in the countryside of Nardò, in the historical districts, best suited to the whole area, and many of them in the immediate vicinity of the beautiful protected area of ​​the Portoselvaggio Natural Park. Agricultural management has always been aimed at respecting nature and plants, with the use of integrated production systems that aim to limit the use of fertilizers and pesticides to a minimum. Here, in addition to the native grapes of Negroamaro, Primitivo and Malvasia Nera di Lecce, also other less typical grapes that have been among the most cultivated grapes of Salento for years: Malvasia Bianca, Garganega and Chardonnay, as regards the berry grapes white, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese for the black berried ones.
